Every Commonwealth Games must include at least ten individual sports and no more than fifteen on its programme. Athletics and Swimming are compulsory and the host city selects at least eight other sports from an approved list.

Sixteen sports - twelve individual sports and four team sports and will be contested at the Melbourne 2006 Games. Basketball has been included for the first time. Twelve events in four sports will also be held for elite athletes with a disability.
